What does a proper tiger fishing experience actually cost, and what are you truly paying for?

There are cheaper fishing trips in Africa; there are also much more expensive ones.

At Kubu & Kwena, we host close to 600 fishing guests every year on the Zambezi River. About 60% of guests return. We do not take this for granted, and we continually ask how we can provide travellers with more value.

So… How Much Does Tiger Fishing Cost?

The honest answer is:

A proper tigerfishing experience can cost anything from:
N$8,000  in Komatipoort or Jozini, to
N$80,000  in Tanzania and more than
N$150,000  per person in the Congo.

The final price depends on the location, the infrastructure, the expertise, where and how you lay your head down for the night, and countless little things that build your experience from the moment you arrive to the moment you feel that sinking feeling that the trip is now over.
At Kubu & Kwena, our most popular package is:

N$21,410 per person

4-Night / 3.5-Day All-Inclusive Premier Tigerfishing Package

This includes:

  • return airport transfers,
  • exceptional accommodation,
  • all meals,
  • fishing boats,
  • fuel,
  • rods and reels with startup tackle,
  • specialist fishing guides,
  • fishing licences,
  • laundry service,
  • and a limited number of live bait. (read this post on live bait in the Sikunga Conservancy)

A typical day starts early, with coffee and a light breakfast served just before sunrise. Fishing hours run from first light until late morning, taking advantage of peak bites and cooler temperatures on the water. Guests return to the lodge around midday for a hearty lunch (or have packed lunches on the water) and some downtime, perfect for relaxing, enjoying the river views, or a swim. Afternoon fishing resumes until sunset, ending the day with cold drinks as the sun goes down. Evenings feature a chef-prepared dinner and time to share stories around the fire. Every day is balanced between exciting time on the river, delicious meals, and true relaxation.

Guests quickly realise is that a true fishing experience is about far more than simply catching fish.

It is about moments you create and remember.

The fishing guides are simply excellent. They know the water, they know the fish, and they put you on tigers. My clients had the time of their lives. We'll be back!!

Why Tiger Fishing Is More Expensive Than Most Freshwater Fishing

Many first-time guests compare tiger fishing to ordinary freshwater fishing. That is a mistake. Tiger fishing is resource-intensive. A quality operation requires:

  • boats running all day,
  • fuel,
  • experienced guides,
  • reliable and suitable boats,
  • engines,
  • specialist tackle,
  • live bait systems,
  • a deep understanding of feeding regimes and behaviour,
  • fish handling protocols,
  • river knowledge,
  • and extensive time on the water.

At Kubu & Kwena, our guides are not “boat drivers”.

They are dedicated fishing professionals.

They compete in our local fishing club trials. They train continuously. They fish even when guests are not around. They study fish behaviour. And they are measured against real fishing performance data. All our guides have a performance metric: In January, our top-performing guide was John, with a Tiger Hour (or TH) of 97.6 minutes on the water. (A TH is our metric for time elapsed between Tiger Landings; more here: Data-driven Fishing at Kubu and Kwena)

These stats foster great rivalry and a competitive spirit among a team of professionals who are always vying for first place, but most importantly, this knowledge helps them improve how they put their guests on fish!

Cheap vs Premium Tiger Fishing

Here is the truth that anglers and lodges would rather not admit publicly:
You can have a premium experience at a cheap destination, or a cheap worthless experience at an expensive one.
Price alone means very little.
A cheaper trip can still be unforgettable if the hosts are hands-on, the guides care about your success, and the fishing atmosphere fosters connection with friends and nature. Conversely, no matter where you are, if you feel like you have to show the guide how to fish, if your booking is the result of clever marketing and your experience is void of passion, the trip will suck no matter where you are or how affordable it was.
At Kubu & Kwena, we are owner-operated and deeply hands-on.
We wanted guests to feel like royalty while still experiencing raw, authentic Africa. And we live by our slogan of “Beautiful moments, unforgettable stories”
Inclusive packages help trip budgets because many anglers underestimate:
  • fuel,
  • tackle losses,
  • broken rods,
  • guide tips,
  • airport logistics,
  • and bait costs.
Buying food on self-catering trips in remote locations, far from oiled supply chains, often also comes as a shock to travellers. Ironically, one of the biggest mistakes guests make while trying to “save money” is buying unnecessary tackle.
Over three years, 82% of our tigerfish were caught on live bait.
Much of that bait is bred by ourselves through our own live bait breeding program. The fanciest equipment in the world cannot replace local knowledge.

So… Is Tiger Fishing Worth the Money?

We believe the answer is simple.
At the end of the day: We only truly keep memories.
Tiger fishing on the Zambezi River is not just about catching fish.
It is:
  • early mornings in wild Africa,
  • drifting through one of the world’s great river systems,
  • time spent with friends and family,
  • adrenaline,
  • silence,
  • laughter,
  • sunsets,
  • and stories that get told for decades afterwards.

The fish are only part of it. The experience is everything. Fishing can give people those unforgettable moments; that is our primary goal.
So before you ask, what does it cost? First, answer this: Is tigerfishing for me? Is this how I will spend my hard-earned cash? It might not be. That’s ok. It doesn’t have to be. Tigerfishing is not for everyone.
(But boy, do we count ourselves lucky.)
