At Kubu & Kwena, your success on the Zambezi River is our priority. Fishing here offers more than the chance to catch tiger fish or nembwe—it’s about achieving results, testing your skills, and connecting with nature. Among the many tools at your disposal, live bait stands out for its effectiveness, especially bulldogs. This method sparks debate among anglers about its impact, raising questions of sustainability and variety in fishing techniques.
Bulldogs have a proven track record. Data from anglers at Kubu & Kwena shows they outperform artificial lures [Hyperlink to databoard], both in hookup rates and successful landings. Tiger fish are particularly responsive to them, nembwe and barbel are also known to take live bait. While bulldogs are effective, there’s no single best approach. Some of our visitors have landed impressive catches using traditional lures, demonstrating that your choice of technique can match your preferences and skills.
One year ago, we started a bulldog breeding programme to address concerns about sustainability and accessibility. The learning curve was steep, but by fine-tuning water quality, pH balance, temperature, and oxygen levels, breeding is now more reliable. The programme ensures a steady supply of live bait while reducing the strain on the river ecosystem. One way of supporting different facets of fishing is our drive for fly fishing that encourages a varied approach for anglers.
Bulldogs are available for R35 each, a price that supports the programme’s costs—dams, pumps, fuel, and feed. In 2025, as we see lower mortality rates and greater efficiency, our guests will likely benefit from reduced prices. It’s important to note that we do not profit from selling bulldogs, our aim is long-term and we reinvest earnings into our programme. This initiative is about empowering you to achieve better results on the water without compromising the future of the river.
Bulldogs are sourced from a wide stretch of the river, supporting community livelihoods. For villagers who sell live bait, this provides income and a valuable connection to anglers like you. While you’re welcome to buy directly from the community, our breeding programme offers a convenient and reliable alternative, saving you time and ensuring bait availability when you need it. You can have a line ready for a tiger 5 minutes after leaving our deck while your coffee is still hot.
We understand that some anglers prefer to buy bulldogs directly from local villagers. At Kubu & Kwena, we fully support this practice as it provides an important source of income for the community. However, we also recognise the challenges it presents. For many guests, the time and fuel spent sourcing bait can compromise their productive fishing time. Additionally, availability can be inconsistent, particularly for larger groups.
Every angler has their own goals—whether it’s landing a trophy tiger fish, enjoying a quiet morning on the river, or exploring new techniques. At Kubu & Kwena, we’re here to help you achieve those goals. By providing sustainable options, sharing effective techniques, and supporting local communities, we aim to make every visit to the Zambezi an opportunity to excel.
The river is your stage, and we’re here to guide you toward your best performance. Will this be the trip where you land your biggest catch yet? Let’s make it happen together.
Yours in fishing,
The Kubu & Kwena Team
